Where Voices Shine as One
Oceanlight Music offers a dynamic choral program for students in grades three through eight, providing high-quality vocal training in a fun, supportive, and inclusive environment. Singers will prepare and perform in two major concerts each year, as well as participate in community outreach performances that connect music-making with service and cultural engagement.
Repertoire will be thoughtfully selected to be age and developmentally appropriate, exposing singers to a rich variety of musical styles and traditions.
This program is secular (non-religious based), and open to singers of all backgrounds. We seek to sing texts that uplift and connect us in the human experience.
While most repertoire will be secular in nature, some selections may explore texts from diverse religious and cultural traditions as part of the historical and artistic study of choral music. This approach aligns with the National Association for Music Education’s position on the inclusion of sacred music in the school curriculum, which can be read here.
About the Director
Dr. Justine Hansen has been teaching and directing music for nearly 20 years across K–12, collegiate, church, and community settings. While teaching at Pacific Ridge School (Carlsbad) and The Bishop's School (La Jolla), her choirs earned top awards and superior ratings at festivals and competitions. In recent years, she has also been invited to conduct Honor Choirs for the San Diego Unified School District.
Dr. Hansen has served as Music Director for numerous musical theater productions, including annual middle and high school shows at Pacific Ridge School. In the community, she is the Director of Music at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Coronado, where she leads the Chancel Choir and Praise Band, and conducts large-scale concerts with professional orchestra twice per year.
She holds a BFA in Vocal Performance with K–12 Music Education certification, an MA in Choral Music Education, and a DMA in Music Education. In addition to her work as an educator and conductor, Dr. Hansen performs locally as a freelance soprano, both as a soloist and ensemble member.
She is passionate about children’s vocal health and development, the art of choral music, and the powerful stories we can tell through singing.
After moving to North County San Diego in 2020, Justine identified a need for a children’s and youth choral music offering in her local community. While the first season of Oceanlight choirs rehearses at a time most-suited to homeschool kids, future programming will expand to serve young people during “after-school” and evening times. When not making music, Justine enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband, 3 kids, 2 dogs, and a cat.
